Shannon to Dublin Water Supply Project
Public Consultation Uisce Éireann
Closing Date: 5pm, Monday 4th March 2025
Uisce Éireann has launched a public consultation on its proposed Water Supply Project for the Eastern and Midlands Region, one of Ireland's largest ever infrastructure programmes. The project aims to reduce Dublin's reliance on the River Liffey and meet projected water demand increases of 34% by 2044.
The proposed scheme will abstract 2% of the Shannon's average flow at Parteen Basin, treat it near Birdhill, Co. Tipperary, and transport it via a 170km pipeline through Tipperary, Offaly, and Kildare to Peamount in Dublin. The project will create a treated water supply route across the country, enabling future supply points in several counties.
Public information sessions will be held at locations along the proposed route in Tipperary, Offaly, and Kildare, complemented by online webinars. Full details and submission information are available at water.ie/watersupplyproject.
This consultation will inform the design and environmental reports before submission to An Bord Pleanála. Uisce Éireann particularly encourages engagement from stakeholders, landowners, and communities along the proposed route.
The Public Consultation Institute of Ireland (PCII) is committed to engaging citizens and empowering communities through the use of emerging technologies, which are transforming how the Government and citizens communicate and interact. PCII's mission is to bring more people into the public participatory process. Not only will this expand informed public engagement, early studies suggest that it is likely to enhance the diversity and quality of participation.
