Public Consultation: Lucan Road Boardwalk Alterations

Proposed Alteration to Grand Canal to Lucan Urban Greenway Project South Dublin County Council, in partnership with the National Transport Authority, announces proposed alterations to the Lucan Boardwalk component of the approved Grand Canal to Lucan Urban Greenway project.

Background:

  • Original Part 8 approval received in November 2022

  • Project scope: 8+ km of new/improved walking and cycling facilities

  • Connects Lucan Village to Grand Canal via Griffeen Valley Park

  • Links to 5+ schools, residential areas, and local amenities

Key Proposed Changes:

  1. Boardwalk Modifications:

    • 60% reduction in boardwalk length

    • Reduced environmental impact

    • Traffic calming measures on Lucan Road

    • Relocation of 8 parking spaces

  2. Environmental Benefits:

    • 60% reduction in tree removal (from 1160 sqm to 480 sqm)

    • 2:1 tree replacement ratio

    • New plantings between boardwalk and Sarsfield Park

    • Visual screening implementation

  3. Traffic and Parking Arrangements:

    • Extended 6m road section to Brookvale Park entrance

    • Enhanced traffic calming approaching Lucan Village

    • New parking area in Sarsfield Park (approximately 75m from Chapel Hill)

Project Timeline:

  • If alterations not approved, original Part 8 Design will proceed

  • Construction anticipated to commence in 2026
